Gao Jianfu (1879-1951) was born in Panyu, Guangdong Province, China. He was a world renowned ink wash painting artist, a famous Chinese painter of the modern era, an art educator, and one of the founders of the Lingnan School of Painting. He, together with Gao Qifeng and Chen Shuren, were called “the three outstanding artists in Lingnan”. There are real international auction prices for his works. He excelled at Chinese landscape paintings, bird-and-flower paintings, and paintings of carp and other animals, while also producing figure paintings and calligraphy. His paintings participated in many international exhibitions and attracted the attention of Western art circles, winning a Gold Award from the World Expo in Italy and Grand Awards from the World Expos in Panama and Belgium. Several of his artworks have been collected by museums of some countries.
Integrating Japanese and Western painting techniques with a foundation of traditional Chinese painting, he founded the Lingnan School of painting, emphasizing on copying from nature and using techniques such as rendering in color and ink wash to create form and substance. His influence on Chinese painting in the modern era was far-reaching and profound.
